I shall be campaigning for Cambiaso to be in there this year, when the awards take place in Shanghai.
Winning the Olimpia de Oro, incidentally, is not just Cambiaso coming good after many years on the scene as he closes in on his 40s.
It represents a genuine step up for Cambiaso, into the realms inhabited in recent years by other winners of the gong in Argentina, including the world’s leading footballer Lionel Messi, boxer Marcos Maidana, and the golfer Angel Cabrera.
Juan Manuel Fangio, the legendary Formula One racing driver was the very first recipient in 1954, and Diego Maradona was the honoured party in 1986.

But even more significantly than any of these sporting greats, Cambiaso joins the only other polo player to have won the coveted prize - Juan Carlos Harriott, who had the mantle bestowed upon him in 1976.
Harriott really was the greatest polo player the world has ever seen. Harriott held a 10-goal handicap between 1961 and 1980, and won the Argentine open 20 times.
Following his second consecutive win of The Triple Crown with La Dolfina team quartet, not only has Adolfo been recognised by the polo community, but also the sporting world at large.
Just as La Dolfina have raced into the history books this season by equaling the Coronel Suarez team’s Triple Crown victory in 1974 and ’75, Cambiaso has drawn another comparison with that historic team.

The accolade which Cambiaso will treasure the most – is the comparison with Harriott.
