Besides being a movie junkie, I've enjoyed watching TV series for as long as I can remember. The first non-Swedish televised series that made an "impact" on my life was Twin Peaks.
The music, the scenery, the mysterious characters like Dale Cooper, who investigated and solved the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer, were only a few of the components that made this American tv-series such a massive success in the 90s. The fact is that Twin Peaks still today is ranked as one of the best TV shows of All-Time by many magazines and online sites.
As of late, I've been addicted to reality series on gold mining. The series that I've watched every single episode of are Gold Rush, Yukon Gold and Bering Sea Gold. I'm not sure which one is my favourite, but I'm pretty sure why I like these series so much. Just like many people who play poker for a living, the miners in these series never know what to expect in the next cleanup (when they check the sluice box for gold). It's a gamble, every week!
I suspect there's a much greater risk in being a gold miner than playing poker full time. All you need to be a full time pro is a decent bankroll, some skill and patience, a computer and a decent Internet connection. Besides, you can work in the comfort of your own home.
The gold miners need to work very long days and sometimes in pretty shitty weather; they are usually away from their families throughout the entire mining season (roughly 125 days in Alaska); they need to pay for bulldozers, excavators and other heavy equipment that breaks down regularly... and not to forget the fuel! Well, luckily for them, fuel is pretty cheap in the U.S. compared to Europe.
I'm seriosly considering getting some gold prospecting equipment for next summer. I love being out in nature and I'm from a country that should have lots of gold, so why not try and find a few nuggest in a creek? Who knows? Maybe I find the mother lode?
To be continued...
