The Toyota Prius can handle winter weather, but the cold keeps the engine running so fuel economy takes a hit.
OUR TAKE: It's a Prius--what more can be said about it? Well, considering it's been a while since we piloted one through a wintry blast such as we've had this past month, we can add a few notes on its snow-handling ability.
The Prius managed the snow with aplomb and had plenty of grip, but the hybrid side of the equation took a hit: The dashboard indicator never showed better than 39 mpg. The engine had to run a lot to keep the climate control system going, which negated the biggest benefits of the Prius philosophy. Even though we mostly opted for stop-and-go driving, which is supposedly when a Prius is at its best, keeping the interior warm meant the engine didn't shut down as often as it would in L.A. traffic.
This particular example had XM satellite radio, which we didn't figure out for several days--it's not very easy to find on the computer screen, particularly given the audio controls are the weakest part of the command center.
